Planning Business Websites

Everything starts with a plan...

If you like an easy life, we can design a website for you provided you can tell us what you want your website to do, what colours you want us to use, and then send us the text and images we need to build into the site. That's all you need in order to build a website. However, there are still a few things that you need to do, and a couple of things that are useful to know.

For example, you still need a domain name for your website and, if you don't choose our 'Plus Pack', you'll also need to organise and set up web hosting. Also, the more input you provide us with, and the more you understand what it takes to build a website, the more likely you are to get a website that does what you want and looks how you want.

So, here are a few things you should consider when planning your website

  • Domain Names: You need to choose a suitable domain name for your website - not always easy.
  • Page Contents: Most importantly, you need to put careful thought into the the words you use on each page.
  • Using Images: Images play an important part in making a website visually attractive.
  • Website Hosting: Before you can put your website on the internet, you need web hosting.

Explaining what you want your website to do

It may sound obvious, but if you want an effective website, you need to be able to tell your website designer what you want it to do! For example, do you want people to buy from you online, visit your business, and so on. To do this, you need to write a description of your objectives, usually called a 'design brief'. website content

Writing content for your website

The term 'website content' refers to the text and image content of a website. You'll find the expression 'Content is king' everywhere on the internet, and for good reason. What it means is that it's not enough to have pretty pages on your website; your visitors (and Google) will measure your website by the words on the page. If you'd like a few guidelines on writing your website content, read on...

using images

Regardless of the type of website you are after, the images you use are important. Whether you use images to show people your business, who you are and what you do, or just to break up the pages and make them more interesting, you need good quality and relevant images. For a little advice, read on...

website hosting

Regardless of the type of website you want, it needs to be hosted online and will need maintaining, so this is a very important consideration. In addition, you also need to think about how often you plan to update your website with extra information, or perhaps add extra pages in the future. For a little advice, read on...

Website Colours

Colours play an important part in website design. There are countless articles on the internet which speak about the effects of colour, but we're not going to join the discussion here. Instead, we'll assume that you already have an idea what colours you want your website to be in, and that you want to tell us what colours to use on your website. Maybe you like the idea of light blue and grey. But how do you tell us exactly which shade of grey?

using colours on a website

Just like on a TV, colours on a computer screen are created by mixing together the colours Red, Green and Blue. Each has a value from 0 to 255 which gives a total of more than 16 million different colour possibilities. Each colour can be identified with a unique 'Hex' (hexidecimal) code and, by using Hex codes, you can tell us exactly which colours you want us to use.

Happily, there are many websites with online colour pickers to help you find your favourite colours and create a colour scheme for your new website. Here are two of the more popular sites and our own colour table:

We like HTML websites. This website is an HTML website. We don't have the time or need to maintain a blog, and the site doesn't need any fancy add-ons, just a couple of simple forms. It loads quickly and isn't of interest to hackers. We don't need a CMS website.

HTML websites are more secure, need less maintenance and are cheaper than CMS sites, but are not as easy to update or add new pages to, if you plan to do this frequently. That said, we include a free update service if your website is hosted with us.

cms websites

CMS websites, such as Wordpress, are very popular. If you want your website to include a blog or need data driven features and functions, a CMS website may be what you need. However, they are more expensive, require regular maintenance, are usually slower than HTML websites and are popular targets for hackers.

Before you order a website, from us or from anywhere else, you should draw up a list of what you want your website to do. That will usually dictate what type of website you need.

If you're not sure what sort of website best suits your needs, we will of course help you choose.
